A great way to light up someone’s Christmas is with Keith Kalvik’s “Covid Nightlights.”

The Hanniford, ND native creates the unique nightlights using strings of 50-100 lights in Top Shelf liquor bottles.

“When I was bartending, my friend gave me a Large Grey Goose Vodka bottle with lights in it that was used for several weddings as lighting for my liquor displays,” he said. “Now it is a permanent light on my bathroom sink!”

He started making the lights himself at the start of the COVID pandemic, hence the nightlight’s name. It creates a great light and interesting conversation piece.

I had a chance to see the lights at the Fergus Falls, MN Farmers Market where Kalvik sold produce and the nightlights.

In his youth, Kalvik was active in the local Garden Club and 4-H where his projects included gardening, entomology, fishing and fowl. He raised ducks, geese and chickens.

In 1989 he graduated from NDSU-Bottineau (that’s in northern North Dakota. I lived there a few moons ago) . His focus was Fish and Wildlife leading him to a position at the Bloom Exit Wildlife Reserve just east of Jamestown, ND.

It all brought him to an interest in chemical free gardening at an early age.

Many family members have supported him as well by teaching him how to can and process produce like salsa, jams and jellies, pickles, pickled beans and beat and pasta sauces.

“Did you know you can store celery root, Dahlia, Cala Lily, Caladiums over winter in a dark, cool basement?” he said.

His is creative and multi-talented for sure.

His Covid Nightlights range in price from $25 to $35 each with either 50-100 string of lights inside. Prices vary depends on availability and top Shelf popular bottles.
