Deep Roots Festival offers farm tours, learning about local

Learn about local foods, including visits to three farms, at the Deep Roots Festival Sept. 23, 2023 at 34861 405th Ave near  Richville, MN.

The day includes afternoon workshops to learn from local makers and growers about their crafts including shitake mushroom cultivation, fiber arts, garlic planting, mead making 101, hydroponics for everyone, fermentation for beginners and basics of herbal balms.

There is food, an art exhibit, music, marketplace and kids activities.

The farm tours start the day via bus from 10 a.m. to noon. Visits include a trip to Silver Dust Farm where Ken and Dori Larson will describe their organic 60-cow dairy in Ottertail, Silver Dust Farm is a local producer for Organic Valley Cooperative.

The second stop is at Grassroots, It’s a behind the scenes tour of a popular local greenhouse that specializes in apple trees and an eclectic mix of offerings.

Third on the tour is the event’s host - John Saleman - who will give a tour of his innovative Deep Winter Greenhouse design.

Afternoon workshops start at noon and end at 4 p.m.
