Beat Winter with Fun and Local Foods
Back in the day, my hometown of Barrett, MN had a radio station. The call letters, KDGE, were used by the announcers who encouraged listeners to “Kill Dark Gloomy Evenings,” by listening to the station’s tunes and conversations.
The radio station left the community a long time ago, but I often think of those call letters and the announcers’ spin on it. Anyone who lives in an area where there’s often snow and short days enjoys sunshiny conversation and time together.
So I propose a series of KDGE (Kill Dark Gloomy Evenings) posts focusing on activities and foods of a locally grown and produced nature.
Why, there’s Farmer’s Gold Popcorn grown in Perley, MN. The popcorn is on the cob, ready for popping! Once popped, just top with your favorite topping and you’ve got the perfect snack for movie night!
Arranging a card party with friends? How about a snack tray featuring the cheeses from Redhead Creamery LLC in Brooten paired with the wines from Eagleview Winery. Add the jams from Nelson’s Jams and Jellies in Fergus Falls and you’ll have great spreads for breads and to use in cooking! Recently I used their jalapeño raspberry jam with some baked brie for a holiday get-together.
Slices of turkey from Heritage Farms near Wadena or their eggs for a great deviled egg offering makes a great snack over games or movie night festivities!
I invite you to share a recipe or game to KDGE using local produce and products!
Here’s a recipe from Heritage Farms that would be great at a gathering!
